Durabella Seamless Terrazzo at the BMW World Munich.
The floor in BMW World Munich was designed by Urquiola and produced by specialized design-tech flooring brand Aectual. The company uses robotic technology to 3D-print a bioplastic frame a few centimeters high. In addition to traditional geometric patterns, the 3D-printed frame enables free forms that appear to be hand-drawn, like Urquiola’s swirling designs. This frame was transported to where the floor was laid, where it was filled with a mixture of pieces of marble in a bio-based binder. The terrazzo expanded and was polished to create the finished floor.

ABOUT Patricia Urquiola

BMW welt: progressive luxury meets creative excellence.
The design concept for the launch of the new 7 Series, BMW X7 and 8 Series, at the BMW Welt showroom in Munich stems from a recent advertising campaign, with pictures of BMWs against the blue/green shimmer of a frozen lake. The installation plays with this concept of light, changing and adapting to materials and textures through a physical interaction. The floor consisted of a dark green terrazzo infill, created with cutting-edge 3D-technology, combined with organic lines with 3D-printed elements. The result is a single liquid-like surface. An undulating metal mesh acts as a rigid curtain for the space’s floor-to-ceiling windows, reflecting the shades of green and blue from the cars’ metallic paint.

ALL ABOUT
DURABELLA

Durabella is made out of various components based on a special modified binder, marble aggregates and/or natural stones. Durabella biopolymer is made from vegetable oil and is red list free
The beauty and richness of traditional Terrazzo, orginally invented by the Romans, improved with the latest technologies of today, form a unique flooring system. Durabella has exceptional characteristics in appearance, aesthetics and durability. Durabella is a decorative floor finish, made of a colored bio-based binder and mixed in a matrix of marble, glass and other natural materials. After finishing, the natural beauty of the aggregates in a colored setting is exposed to provide a beautiful, durable and flexible Terrazzo.
